Description
As the Canadian Navy celebrates its centennial birthday, it is an oft overlooked fact that Newfoundland remained an independent colony until 1949. As such, her fledgling navy has its own unique history. Rich in maritime culture and lore, Newfoundland stands as a rocky and storm-beaten bastion against the surging Atlantic. To generations of deep-sea mariners it has offered safe haven. Its vivid place names bear witness to happy landfalls in centuries past: Harbour Grace (1583), Heart's Content (1612), and Come By Chance (1706). Indeed, the "Island" has been marked by over a thousand years of recorded seafaring history: Vikings at the end of the 10th century, the voyages of John Cabot (1497), Jacques Carrier (1535-36), and the coastal surveys of James Cook (1760s). Since the earliest days, rugged and enterprising seafarers have worked the Grand Banks in tall ships and open dories. In the Second World War St. John's served as naval base for the escorts of Atlantic convoys. Even though Newfoundland did not join Confederation until 1949, many would argue that the province spawned the first "Canadian" naval reserve. Unquestionably, the hardy British colony gained fame as a "nursery of fighting seamen" in defence of British imperial causes. And these causes included Canada as we know it today.
